Retro

As we age, we become more and more childlike. We begin to rely heavily on others for day-to-day tasks. We no longer drive. We must ask others to take us to appointments. The number of doctor appointments grows. Our eating habits become more picky, less experimental. Eventually, some of us will get to a point where others feed, bathe and change our clothes. A natural retrogression.

Yesterday, I regressed. To a time where most of my adult friends didn’t know me. Probably to a time where many of my college friends didn’t know me. Back to the days before I owned a car. Before I could drink legally. Or even vote. The days when I still lived with my parents and brother.

Yes – I cut my hair! Shorter than it has ever been in over a decade. I’ve been thinking about it for some time. I’ve been ready for a change. Sick of the old. Ready for something new. This time, I actually did research. Presented a couple options to my stylist. She picked my favorite. We dove in.

As her scissors whizzed, she worried it would no longer be low-maintenance. I told her to keep going. She wondered whether I could pull it back for workouts. I said it didn’t matter. She questioned if I had regrets. I said absolutely not! I really wanted this new look. She took her time on the cut. Talked me through how to style it. Suggested product and accessory options to transform the look. She helped me confirm this was a great decision.

Although I’m still able to feed, bathe and clothe myself, this regression is one of choice. Not so natural and very much welcomed. It’s a weight off my shoulders and a motivation to be carefree.
