Recap

Posted by admin on Monday, March 16th, 2009

I’ve got this whole sewing thing down. Or so I think. Friday night, Sweets and I buckled down in our kitchen. Where we have recently installed a new TV. NCAA hoops was on all night. He situated himself at the island with a nursing book. I situated myself at the table with fabric and the sewing machine. And made a baby blanket for Deb and Jasen. Congrats to our dear friends in Phoenix who welcomed their second child into the world last week! As Sweets said, it only takes her an hour to make the blankets now! Well, not quite, but I can certainly do it in one sitting! What do you think (I hear babies like red!)? (BTW, the blanket is folded in the picture – that’s not a seam you see!)
Saturday was the best anti-St.-Patricks-Day ever! You see, I hate the holiday. I’m sure I’ll offend at least 10 of you by saying this. But, any holiday that is used as an excuse to drink is going to be low on my favorites list. So, here’s what I did to avoid it. I took the dog to the park in the morning. Then Sweets and I went to Home Depot where we purchased screws and a stud finder (hello brackets to hang our new TV) and paint chips (cuz we’re gonna put our own footprint on our condo) and batteries and air filters (because they say you should change them every 3 months, but this is the first time we’ve done it since we moved in last summer – whoops!). When we got home, we grabbed our neighbors and their dogs and had a little dog party in the front yard. Then we all congregated at one neighbor’s place (dogs and all) for corned beef and cabbage (the one redeeming factor to the non-holiday). Sweets and I had to leave that party early in order to get ready to meet friends at a local Mexican place for dinner. We then got home just in time for homemade cupcakes (thanks pseudostoops!), meeting Baby Z and Mama Bonnie and watching the Will Ferrell special on HBO.
That day was perfect.
Sunday, I worked at the gym in the morning. Had a meeting there after my shift. Nothing too exciting. On my way home, I picked up our ketubah. I’m not sure I ever did tell you about our final choice. We had a heck of a time picking the matting. But, thanks to a 20% off sale and some gorgeous fabric mats, I think we came up with a good solution. You can see a picture of it below. We plan to hang it in our bedroom, where the walls are blue. I spent some time Sunday afternoon sleeping – though I’m feeling better, I clearly am not 100% yet. We took the dog for a nice walk. And then spent the evening watching The Amazing Race and lots of fun home shows on HGTV.
The only problem with our weekend was it came to an end. And I could have used at least one more day. But, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end!

what a great anti-St. Patrick’s day! My anti-St. Pat’s weekend was spent on the couch being sick. Yay!

Also, great blanket! Love the colors!

  7. HappyascanB Says:

I’m totally with you on St. Patty’s day. . . . We were actually visiting Chicago last year at this time. I was AMAZED at the green river and the drunken chaos around. The blanket is precious! I love the colors! Hope you’re feeling back to 100% pronto!!

  8. Marie Says:

I would have loved another day off. You know, to recover from my soccer game. It’s only fair, right?

    Awesome job on the blanket!

  9. radioactive girl Says:

  10. Kristen Says:

Your first paragraph reminds me of that song from Annie: “betcha he reads, betcha she sews, maybe she’s made me a closet of clothes.”

  11. tara Says:

The ketubah is gorgeous, Nilsa. And I bet it looks even better on a blue wall. It’s perfect! (and so is the blankie.)

  14. Jess Says:

The ketubah is gorgeous and that orange matting will look GREAT against the blue!

  15. Hotch Potchery Says:

No to green beer? Really? ahh. Not offended, but any excuse to color code adult beverages gets a thumbs up in my book.

mmm. Maybe that could be why I am having to work so hard to reverse years of bad decisions.

The blanket is gorgeous, and I don’t know what a ketubah is, so time to backtrack and see!

  16. Hotch Potchery Says:

The ketubah is really, really gorgeous. I thought the picture was pretty before I read what it was…awesome.

  17. Just Moi Says:

First, the blanket is so cute! You should start selling them!! I’ll email you my order later! lol

Second, I agree with you on the whole St. Patty’s thing. I have no idea who people start drinking at 10:00am and I just refuse to even give it a try.

  18. SM Says:

    I love that blanket!!!

And I agree…people who celebrate tomorrow for the sole reason to go out and get drunk annoy me. But I do love the day…being Irish and all it’s a little bit different for me.

  19. nory Says:

Congrats on the blanket; I’m sure the baby and family will love it.

What a packed weekend you had.

And agreed, I detest holidays that are about drinking. Unnecessary.

    Glad you’re feeling better!

  20. Sparkling Red Says:

Gorgeous blanket. Here’s to perfect days! *raises glass*

Sewing used to be second nature to me. I wonder if that comes back like riding a bicycle.

  23. alexa - cleveland's a plum Says:

what kind of sewing machine do you use?!? im impressed.

  24. Mel Heth Says:

You are so crafty! That blanket is adorable -- and will mean so much more to the recipient because it’s homemade. The ketubah looks great, too.

  25. Bayjb Says:

You are so cute and crafty! I’m not a huge St. patty’s day fan but I do enjoy going to see the river.

  26. notyourplainjane Says:

HGTV is addictive, is it not?! i love the print for your bedroom!

  28. christy Says:

I am so impressed by your sewing. I need to get on the ball or else generations of sewing women in my family will end with me. Just a little pressure. I seriously can’t even sew a straight line.

  29. Jen Says:

Loving the baby blanket! Will you make one for my baby if/when I have her/him? (there’s a lot of uncertainty here, so no pressure); )

  30. Lily Says:

That’s an adorable blanket! Did you teach yourself to sew? That’s one of those things I’m going to get to yet this year…

  31. Mandy Says:

Love that blanket! I wish I was talented enough to sew but I don’t think I have the gene.
