Family

My parents were in town this weekend. Which meant getting hairs done with mom. Going out for yummy breakfast with both parents (and Sweets, of course). Hosting the mamas and Baby Z. Hosting our neighbors for the Final Four. Hosting my aunt and uncle for breakfast. All so they could spend time with my parents.

Before my parents returned to Boston, we spent an afternoon with my in-laws. Sitting around the dinner table, my father-in-law was describing his band (he’s the drummer). A bunch of retired guys. Playing at nursing homes and for birthday parties. My father jokingly said, they’d take anyone with a beat. Sweets said, Yeah, anyone with a heartbeat. =)
Over the weekend, I cheated twice on my sweets challenge. Once was intentional and once was unintentional. The intentional cheat was because I agreed to eat a certain dessert made by my neighbor well before I ever came up with this challenge. I decided to grandfather that dessert in to this month. The second cheat occurred when I learned my mother-in-law bought one dessert over another because she knew I wouldn’t eat certain kinds of desserts. There was no way I was going to hurt her feelings by refusing to eat. Today, I’m back on track.
And my Tar Heels are playing Ashley‘s pesky Spartans tonight for the national championship. GO HEELS!

I don’t have a particular affinity for either UNC or MSU, but I am rooting for the Spartans tonight. Nothing against you, I swear. I just like when a very depressed area of the country has something inspirational like a team to rally the masses, as it were.

What’s with that survey bar that popped up when I came to your homepage? It just showed up there asking me to take a survey and then it kept following as I scrolled down the page. Is that something you activated or did somebody hit your site with unwanted advertising?

So I don’t normally have strong feelings one way or the other for UNC, but if they win tonight, I win ALL THREE of the pools I have entered, to the tune of something like 300 bucks. So: GO HEELS!

  4. Shannon Says:

Family time is always fun. I just spent time with my family yesterday for my dad’s birthday and also indulged in some sweets. Don’t feel bad :)

I would say your cheats are all right. It isn’t like you had some kind of free for all, you had good reasons. Because definitely I am the judge of that (I am totally kidding!)

Sounds like you had a busy but fun weekend!

  6. Christina Says:

Wow, you had a healthy does of family time. It sounds like everyone had a good time.

My parents will be here on Friday for the weekend!

Being a Die Hard SEC Dawg, I have never said this before, but today, I say Go Heels!!!! Sounds like you had a great weekend with your folks and family!

  8. Lily Says:

Sounds like a busy weekend! And I don’t think those count as cheats. You’re conscious of what you’re eating otherwise and are diligent about sticking with it. Those DEFINITELY get grandfathered in.

  9. Marianne Says:

Good luck to your Tarheels, Nilsa. My horse (U of Memphis) is out of the dance (sorry for the mixed metaphor), so … I’m a little ambivalent. Your weekend sounded awesome.

although I’m really sports-neutral, I think I have to support my fellow Michiganders and say, Go State! Of course if they lose, no hard, no foul to me. ha ha!

  13. Karen Says:

I am on board for the UNC victory tonight.

I am glad you had a nice weekend with family!

  14. Kristen Says:

You need to get back on track because I ate enough cake this weekend for the both of us.

    You’re Welcome.

  18. Kristen Says:

The cake was super rich chocolate fudge cake with the kind of frosting that’s so thick and sweet it’s almost crunchy.

You would have wanted some, trust me. It was an orgasm on a plate.

  19. Miss Musing Says:

It sounds like you have a wonderful family. I love that your FIL plays in a nursing home band and it sounds like Sweets has a great sense of humor.

For what it’s worth, your cheats sound legitimate. I need to go back and find your original post about your sweets challenge because I need some inspiration to stop eating so many desserts. Too much sugar!

  20. Hotch Potchery Says:

umm. I am a SEC girl myself, and really am not a huge fan of men's basketball unless Auburn or Texas A&M are in it. So by the first weekend of the tourney, I am usually out.

My boss is a MSU grad, and if they win, he might be in a good mood for my tenure meeting…so sorry, I am gonna have to go green.

  21. Sparkling Red Says:

I like the idea of “grandfathering” the dessert. That is a very sophisticated justification! ;-)

  22. LiLu Says:

Go Heels! I can’t WAIT for tonight! Man, I wish I could be in Chapel Thrill just for ONE day…

  23. Marissa Says:

    What a fun weekend!

I’m so curious. What kind of dessert will you not eat?

  26. Kate Says:

    You cheated? *gasp*

I kid, woman. Cheating keeps you on the straight and narrow!

  27. notthelifeiordered Says:

    GOOOO STATE!!!!!!!!!!! :)

You are allowed to indulge every once in a while, no harm in that! Its still early in the month, you can make up for it later :)

  28. Bayjb Says:

Sounds like a great weekend. I love parental visits! And don’t beat yourself up about the sweets challenge. You’re doing great and everyone deserves a cheat.

  29. notyourplainjane Says:

    Go Heels!

  30. marty mankins Says:

To be honest, I’ve never really gotten into the Final Four, except when I’ve had money on one of the teams.

If memory serves me right, it was the Tar Heels that gave me a small payday.

    GO HEELS!

  31. veganmama Says:

Was thinking about you when I saw UNC win tonight at the restaurant while eating dinner :)

  32. Queen Lindsay Says:

Anyone with a heart beat? hahaha That’s too funny. My dad used to be in a rock band but he found God and now he sings at the choir and also rocks out at the nursing home. Don’t worry about the cheating, just get back on the wagon!! :)
