SoMi Speaks

Sunday

Posted by SoMi's Nilsa on Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Sunday night TV has become an important night in our house. First, it starts off with The Amazing Race. Then we take a quick break before returning to watch HBO’s new series, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, which is a feel-good show starring Jill Scott about (you guessed it) a lady detective in Africa. At the end of that show, I always have a genuine smile on my face.

The Amazing Race has left me smiling for years. I’ve watched every season of that show starting with the first. Love the around the world race. Love seeing parts of the world I might never have to chance to see in person. Love the comraderie within teams and the rivalry between teams.

During the first few seasons, my bestie Chandra and I would call each other during the commercials to compare notes. My brother and I actually seriously considered applying to be participants as we knew we’d provide plenty of entertainment (there’s no holding back between the two of us).

More recently, Sweets and I are glued to the TV on Sundays. Often times with his parents, who also adore the show. Now, we discuss the idea of his parents applying to be partcipants. We think they’d be the kick-ass, token “older” team and would surprise many of the younger teams.

This season, there have been some much more competitive rivalries between the teams. It’s gotten downright nasty at times. A couple weeks ago, LaKisha and Jen got into a physical and emotional dual with Margie and Luke. Jen called Luke a bitch for his behavior; some might suggest her name calling was unnecessary.

Fast forward to this past Sunday. Sweets and I watched the show with his parents. This time, LaKisha and Jen had trouble with one of the challenges. To the point where Jen said she wanted to go home. At which point, Sweets dad said, “She’ll be bitch-slapped if she goes home now.

Yes, that’s right. My father-in-law knew of and correctly used the term, bitch-slapped. He is my hero.

How funny! And awww….the Amazing Race. You got me HOOKED on that show. I’m so sad this season is almost over.

  2. k8 Says:

Pretty sure I’m the one that would GET bitch-slapped -- STILL, at 36 years old, if I uttered that aloud at my parents’ house.

  3. Kristi Says:

Can’t comment much on this, we don’t get channels on our TV. In Miami we started getting interested in Millionaire Matchup.

  4. Christina Says:

That was funny! My future FIL is just as streetwise, he used “bling” properly the other day!

  5. Marie Says:

I still can’t get into watching reality tv. I feel like most of the shows on tv now are reality shows which is no fun. Plus Matt is not a big fan of tv unless he’s watching basketball or tennis (he’s a sports whore).

You can imagine how we’re fighting over the remote now since it’s the bball playoffs.

  6. Karen Says:

I love the Amazing Race also. My dad would certainly know “bitch-slap”. Dad is pretty hip actually. He does texting and sends me video on youtube. He even watches TMZ once in a while. LOL.

  7. adriana Says:

Hahaha he said bitch slapped! I love it. My mom and stepdad totally want to go on that show, and they’re like your in-laws, they’d so kick ass.

I have seen the Ladies Detective thing on HBO, but I though it was a movie or something that was just repeating all the time. Haven’t watched it… maybe I’ll give it a shot!

  8. Jess Says:

Wait, why didn’t you apply to be contestants? And is it too late to do it now?

  9. Crissy Says:

We watch America’s Funniest Videos on Sundays. It’s my daughter’s favorite show, and we have started to love it now too since it makes her so happy.

  10. LiLu Says:

He was also 100% correct. It was only the second episode of the Amazing Race I’ve ever seen, and even I knew that.

  11. Alice Says:

i watch very little on the day it actually airs… that’s what my DVR is for!! i’m not actually sure what’s on Sundays that i watch. real housewives? is that a sunday show?

and dude, you and sweets MUST APPLY to be contestants, pls. :-)

  12. saratogajean Says:

I can’t watch The Amazing Race because I’d be so jealous.

Every reality show I see I think I would be a great contestant for.

    Except “Rock of Love.”

  13. Jules Says:

I have tried to get Hubby to do The Amazing Race for years. He says we’ll look bad when we fight because I’m hungry and he’s hyper. That might be true. And I love that he used ‘bitch-slapped’ correctly! LOVE that!

  14. Nora Says:

    Sounds like awesome in-laws =)
Sunday night rituals are my favorite… anything to make the night less bleak. It’s my least favorite night of the week!

  15. hillary Says:

I love the Amazing Race. If Canadians were allowed to apply, I totally would.
Who are you rooting for? Since Mel & Mike went home, I don’t know who to cheer for anymore.

  16. E.P. Says:

Haha, that’s incredible! I love when people surprise you like that.

I haven’t watched either shows you mentioned, but I might have to check them out.

  17. sara.jane Says:

Bitch-slapped!!! HAHAHA Love that. :) I’ve never been into the show, but then again, it’s probably because Sunday nights I’m usually watching a movie or not home.

  18. mandy Says:

Any older person who can correctly use the term bitch slap is my hero. That is just great. I am not a big tv show watcher anymore. I prefer to read.

  19. KT Says:

My roommate in Philly and I applied to be on the Amazing Race. I think we could have kicked ass, but we didn’t even get picked for an interview. What crap! :-(

  20. marissa Says:

    I love your father-in-law!

  21. Surfergrrl Says:

I used to be totally addicted to that show, but as with all reality shows that I used to be totally hooked on, I kind of lost interest.

That’s funny what your dad said. :)

  22. Holly Says:

Haha your FIL does sound rather awesome! :P
