CrocShit! Now that everyone under the sun has blogged about their BlogHer experiences, most of you know there was a lot of free giveaways. From the small stuff (need a flash drive? I got about 20) to the much bigger items (washer/dryer, $2,500 shopping spree, etc.), women were frantic about taking free stuff home. Only, it appears at least one woman took it too far, threatening a representative from Crocs that she would write terrible things about the shoe company if he didn’t give her a free pair of shoes. I might suggest going to the store and spending $30 next time instead of extortion. But, maybe that’s just me. {source: Consumerist, ValleyWag}
eHugs! Talk about an awkward and frustrating conversation. Try convincing someone who doesn’t blog that it’s a real community. That you make real friends there. That the relationships you form there are real. We’ve all been there before, fighting for our online existence. Becky sums up these sentiments nicely. {source: Becky’s Blog}
Broken! While at BlogHer, I reconnected with a really lovely blogger. Amy has a beautiful heart and a beautiful soul. It was my own personal treat to finally meet her in person. Upon her return from BlogHer, she wrote an amazingly beautiful piece about her broken heart. We’ve all been there before, so I think we can all relate to her thoughts. {source: Inherent Passion}
Mommy! As mentioned above, mommy bloggers were all the rage at BlogHer this year. And while only a few mommy bloggers would stoop to the levels of the CrocShit lady, many mommy bloggers, in fact, are upstanding citizens. And they have made a huge impact on the blogosphere. So much so that NPR picked up a story about mommy bloggers at BlogHer. And no matter what my thoughts are on the conference itself, it is most definitely pretty cool that the conference is seeing a national audience beyond the blogosphere. {source: NPR}
Twoops! Chicago resident Amanda Bonnen is learning the hard way that Twitter is not all it’s cracked up to be. Back in May, she Twittered about the unacceptable conditions of her apartment. Part of her Twitter post said, “Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it’s okay.” The result of those 140 characters or less? The apartment management company is suing her for $50,000, claiming libel. Looks like getting Bonnened might be the new getting Dooced (yet another reason for me never to Twitter, since we all know I can’t keep my mouth shut!). {source: Chicago Sun-Times}
That’s all from here for this week. Have a great weekend and I’ll see you on the flip side!

Yes Twitter is a bit of an interesting phenomenon isn’t it? I very quickly learned that many people, companies etc. will find and follow you based on what you tweet (um Veggies, a Bank here in Oz, etc.) and thus tried to be non-specific when it comes to complaining via Tweets. I don’t name work, or businesses etc if I can help it, because I could very easily imagine something exactly like this happening.

Love the recap this week.
I can’t believe someone would have tried to extort a pair of Crocs out of the representative at BlogHer! That sort of thing gives all bloggers a bad name — and over an ugly (albeit comfortable) pair of shoes.
And regarding the whole Twitter thing … that should serve as a good reminder to all of us to be careful of the messages that we put out on the interwebs.

I am laughing b/c it seems like everyone was trying to pawn off extra flash drives post-BlogHer!
I need to do some more reading before I come to a conclusion about the Horizon Twitter suit. I thought if you said something that wasn’t necessarily UNtrue, it’s not defamation. Regardless, most property companies in Chicago are slime and I’m apt to side with the tennant--Horizon is probably going to lose some business for their bullying. I wonder how Yelp would be affected under this ruling…

I really look forward to these posts — not only because it fills me in on things that I may have missed but because it allows me to read some other blogs that I may not read.

These Replays get better each week! I’m totally with you on the Crocs. They’re available everywhere, lady. If you paid to go to BlogHER, get off your $20 for a pair of plastic shoes. Good Grief!!! Twoops: LOVE IT!! I pity that girl, though. . . . That sucks!!

I feel bad for Horizon. Now instead of only 20 people (she only had like 20 followers) knowing that they’re idiots the entire Internet knows. For a company to publicly state “We’re a sue first, ask questions later” kind of company, well they deserve the backlash.
As for the woman with the crocs…are you kidding me?! That’s crazy!

I read about the Croc thing too and I really don’t believe it. I sincerely hope the woman, whoever she is, feels really bad about her threat AND perhaps tries to understand why it was so important that she threaten a man for shoes. And then perhaps seeks professional help. (Is that too mean? That’s kind of how I feel about it.)

Can’t she counter-sue to, you know, have the mold removed? I believe it’s only libel if the statement is false… right?

The Croc story cracked me up. How silly is that person?! Some people are just utterly ridiculous.
I also heard about the twitter story. That too is nothing short of ridiculous. That company blatantly said “We’re a sue first, ask questions later kind of an organization.” That immediately tells you they will look for any little excuse to get money out of people. What if the girl was walking down the street and she happened to say the exact same thing but one of the people from the company heard her. Would they sue her as well? So should we all take down our blogs, facebook pages, twitter accounts, etc. while also getting rid of free speech? Where does it end?
Ok, end rant.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Oh boy. And here I thought that I could mouth off on Twitter. I’d better watch it. That’s scary stuff!

If her apartment is moldy, how is that libel??
July 31st, 2009 at 1:01 pm
I’d pay someone $30 NOT to give me a pair of Crocs.
July 31st, 2009 at 6:52 pm
Um, who would threaten someone for a pair of Crocs? Crocs, really?
August 1st, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Ahh… this is why I would never Facebook or tweet or anything using a company’s name. Ouch.
And you couldn’t PAY me to wear crocs. Sorry. It’s true. Wait, did I just use a company’s name? Well, they are cute on my kids.

oh wow on all accounts!
