Replay
Replay is the name of the game. It’s my weekly post where I review the work of others. How it impacts me. Why I like what they’ve said. No need to reinvent the wheel. After a brief synopsis, I send you on your merry way. And unlike the past few weeks, I’ve got a bunch of things for you to read and enjoy!
Happiness! Karen and I respectfully disagree on a lot of things. One of the reasons I like her as a blogger is because she puts thought into what she’s saying. It enables us to intellectually disagree, instead of spewing hateful things to one another because we’re not willing to take a time out to think about why we disagree. With all that background, though, I’m sending you to her blog. Because we do agree on (at least) one thing. By and large, happiness is a choice. I’d tell you more here, but would only be stealing her thoughts. You’ll have to read for yourself. {source: Smiling Through It All}
Reviewed! There are many bloggers who review products as part of their posting habits. Some bloggers devote whole blogs to product reviews. This week I read an interesting blog post about review blogs. This blogger notes some major observations about review blogs (specifically, dealing with PR companies to get products to review) before and after the most recent recession. I thought some of you might be interested in this entry. {source: ProBlogger}
Bard! My aunt works for the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in marketing and public relations. Anyone who works in these fields knows you pretty much work your ass off. My aunt does a ton of work behind the scenes to keep her theater in the news. To keep it in good standing with the critics. To take any opportunity she can get to place her theater in newspapers, magazines and in segments for radio and TV. You can imagine how thrilled she was when her hard work paid off this week. The theater was featured on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. Yes, that’s right. National news. She rocks (see segment below). {source: Chicago Shakespeare Theater}

Metered! Here in Chicago, we’ve had a transition of sorts. The city leased out our parking meters to a private company. There has been all sorts of hoopla over the change. Some gripes are justified (the automated clocks on the meter machines are not the same from one block to the next). Others are just people whining over finally having to pay to park in the city. In all this fuss, one item has been missed. One important item. The yearly increases in fees. So, if you thought you were paying a lot right now? Just wait until January 1, 2010 when the fees go up again. {source: Chicagoist}
Violence! A number of years ago, I participated in a 40-hour state-mandated training so that I could volunteer with victims of domestic violence. It was during that time (and the following year of volunteering in a shelter for these victims) that I learned anyone can be affected by domestic violence. Young. Old. Rich. Poor. Black. White. None of that stuff matters when it comes to eligibility for domestic violence. Many times victims of DV are afraid to come forward. Afraid their abusers will further harm them mentally and physically. And so, they choose silence. Even after their abuser is charged and behind bars. That’s why I give Rihanna a lot of credit for coming forward with her experiences with Chris Brown. The details of their relationship matter not. It’s the fact she’s openly talking about DV in the hopes that it helps someone else get out of such a terrible situation. Impressive, admirable and brave. {source: Good Morning America}
Secret! Last year around this time, I hosted BlogSecret, where I provided a platform for people to submit anonymous blog posts. Then, I sent those anonymous posts to someone else also participating in the project. On a specified day, everyone would publish the anonymous post I sent them. Authors knew where their posts were published, but blog hosts did not know who the author was. Almost 80 bloggers participated in the debut of BlogSecret. I’d call that a success. Since then, Brandy has started Project Secret, where she collects blurbs from readers and anonymously posts them once a week. Since we have a lot of overlapped readership, I have decided not to pursue another BlogSecret this year. If you’re interested in airing something anonymously, I highly suggest getting in touch with her! {source: It’s Like I’m … mmmagic!}
Well friends, that’s all I’ve got for you this week. Have a great weekend and I’ll see you on the flip side!

Thank you so much for the kind words. I never expected to be on the Replay – I am honored. I also liked the Rihanna interview. Domestic abuse is such a complicated issue. I found it interesting and powerful that Rihanna felt she has the responsibility not to go back to an abusive relationship even though she really wanted to go back right away. She didn’t want other girls to think it going back was the right thing to do. That is a lot of awareness for a someone who was being abused.

I’ve been thinking about Blog Secret these past few days! =) Thanks for the update, I think Brandy’s project is really cool & I’m glad that your admin work has been reduced because of it!

Ugh, I am not a fan of the meters. It has encouraged me to use public transportation though.

I love the, making a difference, segment. I wish the news would focus more on these stories than just bad news all the time. I think it inspires people to do something good for other people and their community. Kuddos to your aunt for being a part of it.

I was reading that some city, and now I don’t remember which (maybe San Francisco?) was thinking about extending parking meter hours AND charging on Sundays to make up a budget deficit. It sounds horrifying but why SHOULDN’T we pay on Sundays?
