SoMi Speaks

Sorts

SoMi was a wee bit out of sorts this weekend. To give you a baseline, she is happiest when she is on the couch with Sweets and I. More specifically, she likes it best when she’s laying inbetween Sweets and I on the couch. She doesn’t like when we leave her at home. She doesn’t like us in different rooms. She really just wants a perfect harmony in our home.

So, on Friday night when we came home from work, walked her, fed her and proceeded to leave, she wasn’t happy. She gave us *that* look. That “you’re abandoning me” look. It really is heartbreaking. But, we scooted off to my aunt’s house for a scrumptious dinner and an evening with some of her wonderful friends (people whom have become an extension of my family).

Saturday, SoMi was out of sorts again. Not entirely because we left her alone. In fact, for most of the day, someone was with her. But, we did abandon her for less than an hour in the morning, so Sweets and I could go rent a wet saw. Yes, that’s right, the tiling project was ON this weekend.

Once we came home with the saw, there might have been words exchanged, because one of us left the sample tile at the hardware store. Neither of us wanted to claim responsibility. Instead, we got grumpy, which also made SoMi unhappy. And I returned to the store to get the tile (good thing the store is only 10 minutes away).

Then, I left to spend many hours with the baby and her mamas. At their house. Where I got to read Baby Z a story. And play hide and go seek. And follow her COMMANDS (she is a bossy little girl) to sit in her little red chair and lie down when she told me. I also took a trip to the grocery store (mental note: Saturday afternoons at Trader Joe’s are not recommended if you have an aversion to crowds).

And, although Sweets had the project well underway by the time I got home. SoMi was pouting because he wasn’t paying attention to her. He wasn’t on the couch. And he kept leaving her inside while he went downstairs to the garage to use the wet saw. While there were more frustrating moments for him over the course of the day, he made great progress on the fireplace.

Saturday night, SoMi gave us *that* look again when we left her for a few more hours. You see, Sweets and I needed to check out this cool new burger joint called The Bad Apple. And what better way than to meet up with one of his childhood friends and that guy’s girlfriend. While we munched on amazing burgers (probably the  best I’ve had in the city so far), we heard all about their upcoming, multi-month trip to India, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Bali. And we might have tried to play a game of Trivial Pursuits, but we decided the game sucked. The questions were too easy.

Sunday, SoMi sulked again. Sweets and I needed to leave her to return the wet saw, go to Ulta and stop by Whole Foods (another mental note: going to any grocery store on Superbowl Sunday is definitely not recommended. Ever.). You’d think that because we spent the afternoon at home, SoMi would’ve been happy. But, she was on edge again.

Sweets spent many hours trying to finish the tiling project (he’s *this* close to completion, at which point I will share photos). That project is in the living room, in the front of our condo. I spent many hours cooking in the back of the unit. I got pork chili underway (not for the Superbowl, funny enough, just for our meals this week). Made salads for Sweets and I to take to work today. Cooked some eggs and turkey bacon that I could bring to work for breakfast. Made bean soup, which once cooled, would be used for dip. And made guacamole. The latter two would come with us for the Superbowl party.

I think SoMi was especially soured when we left for to watch the Superbowl elsewhere. Some friends came over to our place first, so I think SoMi thought we’d be staying home. But, in fact, we bundled up to leave shortly thereafter. And after bounding down the hallway, thinking she was coming with us, she gave me the ultimate of looks as we left. If I’m honest, I’ll tell you it was really heartbreaking, especially since I knew I’d come home with the scent of another dog on me.

We watched the Superbowl with friends. One friend is a die-hard Colts fan, so part of me was pulling for them. But, part of me was happy to see the Saints win. I tried to pay attention to most commercials. But, I somehow missed the Tim Tebow spot (though, I hear he tackles his mom at the end). And I think Doritos was, by far, the most clever with their ads. Once again, most other spots that I saw fell flat. Seems to be a trend over the last 5 years. A disappointing one at that.

And so, even though Sweets and I returned to SoMi that night. Even though we let her play in the yard with some of her favorite canine pals. Even though we really were around quite a bit this weekend. I’m pretty sure SoMi would take a do-over if we offered it to her. One that kept us home-bound, on the couch, snuggling.

Did you do anything fun for the Superbowl? What was the highlight of your weekend?

I did NOTHING for the super bowl; in fact I finished one book (Sookie Stackhouse) and started another (The Help), unpacked and just relaxed.

Highlight of my weekend? Feeling my friend’s baby kick on Friday night and putting on a successful shower for her on Saturday. Oh, and the 70 degree weather with palm trees helped too :)

(Jack also sulks when I leave him and it literally breaks my heart.)

    Awww, poor SoMi! :)

I was PSYCHED the Saints won!! Even though the commercials fell flat, I thought it was the best Superbowl game in years. Clean play, steady drives down the field, no fights, and a few moments of really great, exciting football.

Of course, my body is not thanking me for all those chips, cheese, and guac and that later-than-normal bedtime…

Awww, poor SoMi!! It breaks my heart to leave Rose any time we go out, in the morning, when we go to work, worst when we come home only to go out again for the evening, and it was almost enough to make me not go on vacation in January. I felt HORRIBLE because she hates being left. The highlight of this weekend was Saturday, where my Sweet was out all afternoon supervising an entrance exam (on a weekend! Who does that?!) and I did something very out of character: I snuggled up with blankets with my little cat and watched a 3 hour marathon of “Say Yes to the Dress”. I NEVER sit in front of the TV. We watch UK shows downloaded on the computer. I felt kind of guilty doing it, but Rose was the happiest cat in the world. Which definitely made it okay :)

I totally understand! Our dogs were banned to the outdoors this weekend for a number of reasons ~ they went to the dog park and need baths (we ran out of time and will bathe them tonight), they destroyed my new, super cute cookie carrier last week while left inside, and we – err, Tim painted the nursery this weekend! :) So, anytime I stepped foot outside, the dogs were flipping out!!! I’m ready for them to be bathed and welcome back inside. They like that much better, too!

I missed the Tebow commercial, too! Gotta look it up on youtube, I suppose.

  5. Kyla Roma Says:

Aw poor kid! At least SoMi sulks, when our puppies get upset they get mad. I’ll come home to Mal dozing on the dining room table, and they’ll pull the books out of the book cases and strip the bindings off of them lol

I’m looking forward to them being a liiiiittle older and calmer =)

This superbowl we showed our house to a friend who might want to buy it from us, it was crazy exciting.

  6. Karen Says:

I think that is one of the reasons I don’t want a pet. I want to come and go as I please without being responsible to anyone else.

The Tebow commercial was the first or second of the night. I nearly missed it myself.

  7. Christina Says:

Poor SoMi, it is hard to get the look. We get that “look” from both of the dogs or if we are paying more attention to one than the other. When we took Rosie to puppy school on Sunday our other dog had such sad eyes.

The highlight was going to see my two brothers in law and taking my father in law out to eat. He is just a great person and I like spending time with him.

Bad Apple sounds so good! Oh and the trick to Trader Joe’s…Sunday morning at 10:30 is the perfect time to go!

  8. k8 Says:

The meow of disdain when I leave Kiki every morning almost breaks my heart. It’s like she’s trying to tell me that Dax molests her or something while I’m gone. Poor thing.

  9. Lisa Says:

Aw, poor SoMi! Leaving the cat is bad enough, and she doesn’t even like us most of the time. Though it sounds like you had a good weekend otherwise!

I seriously thought the Tebow ad was a car insurance commercial. When it first came on, I hushed my husband thinking it was THE commercial, then took it back thinking they’d also started shilling for State Farm or something. Despite it’s cheesiness (and it’s sponsor) it was still pretty sweet. They’re obviously close and love one another a lot, and it’s sweet to see a grown man that’s not afraid to show he loves his mama.

  10. brookem Says:

funny enough, i missed the commercial too! it mustn’t have made much of an impact, because matt and i were waiting for it, and later on, i mentioned that we must have missed it. he said that it was on while we were sitting on the couch watching the tv (we weren’t on the couch in front of the tv the whole time). i guess it didn’t draw me in that much since i dont even remember seeing it!
i liked the doritos ones too… also the ones with the little kids talking. :)

and poor somi! ha, all neglected and all. pets are funny like that, huh? you’ll probably make her day if you take a picture of her for the blog, in her little boots and jacket!!

  11. A Super Girl Says:

Though SoMi was out of sorts, it sounds like you guys had a good weekend! Pictures of the tile project?

  12. Rebecca Says:

I am not an anti-football anti-sports type of person at all, I just didn’t have any superbowl plans. So I jumped at the chance to be taken out to dinner last night. I have never EVER seen the streets of SOHO so empty on a weekend. It was wild. It really was. And of course, I loved it. Then we had an amazing meal at Kittichai (upscale Thai) where the clientele was so obviously the anti-sport type it was hilarious. Very fun people watching.

I would have liked some guacamole though.

  13. Megan Says:

I completely feel your pain about the looks. We painted our living room this weekend which meant that although both of us were home neither of us were cuddling on the couch with the puppies. Distress for them. And the looks they give…heartbreaking.

Sounds like a fun filled weekend for you!

  14. Stef Says:

aww SoMi, my dog sends me on the ultimate guilt trips when i leave him behind too :(. ugh it’s the worst when you go to a place like the hardware store and then have to return bc you forgot something. maybe just bc i hate hardware stores! i didn’t care much about who won the superbowl but i rooted for the saints bc of everything new orleans has been through lately. i had chili yesterday too! well, you’ll be enjoying yours this week, but i’ll just be thinking about how good it was!

  15. KT Says:

Oh man Fuzzy Britches gives us all of the same looks when we don’t invite her to get in the car to go wherever we are going. Sometimes it’s hard to leave!

  16. Kristin Says:

What meeeeeeeeean fur baby parents you are! ah ha ha.

  17. radioactive tori Says:

I had a colonoscopy/endoscopy today which meant yesterday was my prep. We had a nice alone family day and then when the game was on I was in the bathroom with the tv up loud enough to hear it. My kids nicknamed it the “pooper bowl”. (TMI, I am sorry!)

I hate leaving Maya home. She always makes me feel so guilty! My husband doesn’t feel guilty at all, and really there is no reason for us to, she is fine, but I still feel sad leaving her!

  18. mandy Says:

Sandy is a master of “the look” too. In fact she goes as far to throw herself in front of the door with her tail tucked between her legs. Its completely heartbreaking. When my brother leaves to work out of town, she gets depressed and will do nothing but lay on his bed with her head on his pillow for hours. For a dog, shes pretty human in her emotions and responses, its sort of like having a little kid around.

I hope you all get lots of SoMi snuggles in this week.

  19. Jess Says:

I love how you tell this whole story from SoMi’s perspective. Too cute.

  20. Mel Heth Says:

I think SoMi needs a sibling!

  21. Busty Satan Says:

I had a rather disappointing weekend that involved reading the NYTimes on my phone…at a bar…while a friend of a friend got hit on. And then I skipped out on the last hour of the Superbowl to see Avatar. Finally!

  22. Christyn Says:

UM…. SUPER ironic that you blogged about your doggie because I wanted to write about MY NEW DOGGIE regardless of the topic of today’s blog!! It’s all over my facebook page for you to check out when you get a chance — and for you to vote on her name!
    xoxowoofwoof!

  23. Marie Says:

Awwww! She just wanted some more love and attention! I know this because I am that way. I need HOARDS of it (helllooo! I’m an only child).

Let’s see…my weekend consisted of snow, then some snow, and then there was some more snow. Also LOTS of movie watching. I also watched part of the super bowl and I’m SO glad the Saints won!

  24. Windsor Grace Says:

My cats have been giving me “that” look since I brought Chico home.

  25. Stevie Says:

It’s amazing how intuitive animals can be. They pick on so much more than we realize and they also are far more expressive than we realize. My cats do the same thing when they aren’t getting enough attention. Well, one of them sits in the corner and sulks and glares at us, while the other WILL NOT LEAVE US ALONE. And they always know when we’re preparing to go out of town. They know when the suitcases come out of the closet, something’s up. So I always give them extra toys, extra treats and extra catnip :-)

  26. Lisa from Lisa's Yarns Says:

Mmmm, pork chili – sounds divine! I love soups, stew, chilis, etc. Def my fave leftovers to bring to work!

I went to a Superbowl party but only stayed for the half & can’t say I watched a single play. I sat at the kitchen counter with my friend and chatted away. Her husband came over and teasingly alerted us to the fact that we were missing the biggest game of the year. We didn’t care of course and kept right on chatting! It was wonderful, especially since I had seen her the night before at my birthday party – seeing a good friend 2 days in a row is sadly pretty rare now that was are all busy adults!

Sounds like you had a busy/fun weekend! I can just picture the looks SoMi was giving you!!

  27. Bridget Says:

Oh poor Somi! My dog gives me the same look every time I leave so I completely understand.

My highlight was making a new contact at a party Friday who could be quite helpful in my next career move. I was brave enough to admit to this person that I knew who he was and it went really well!

  28. sizzle Says:

The highlight of my weekend was not watching the Super Bowl.

    JK :-)

I actually had a really good weekend with lots of hanging out with old and new friends, the new beau and a lot of laughs with my Mom (it’d been a while).

  29. Jessica Says:

I was really torn about who I wanted to win. Part of me really wanted the Colts to but the win to bring home in New Orleans was sweet to see too. The NO quarterback with his son was so sweet.

  30. Ally Says:

I actually watched the Superbowl and so did my husband. That is the most football I’ve ever seen him watch! Of course, we watched it because my brother wanted to. But still.

I thought the commercials were pretty lame. The only one I thought was clever was the human bridge Budweiser spot. I totally forgot about the anti-choice commercial and must have missed it.
