SoMi Speaks

Grid

Well, friends, we’re back on the grid. Finally. We got home last night around 7 and spent a few hours unpacking the truck and getting ready for the week to begin. Needless to say, I’m a bit behind on my blog reading, but I do hope to play catch-up over the coming days. In the meantime, before I forget, let me tell you a bit about our trip.

In case you missed the fine print last week, Sweets and I went camping with SoMi for a long weekend in Door County. Door County resides on a peninsula in north eastern Wisconsin that juts out into Lake Michigan. There’s water on three sides of the peninsula; inland is inhabited by state and county parks, and quaint towns full of artist galleries and shops and cute inns. It’s a really wonderful get away for city dwellers like us.

We chose Peninsula State Park in a campground we went to last year with friends. And we chose a specific site that was set off to the side of the others. It was wooded and protected and really just perfect. Every morning, we woke up around 6AM (hello sun!) to the birds chirping. And I’m not just talking about a few; we had a symphony of hundreds of chirpers. It was pretty darn amazing.

We spent our days exploring the area. We spent a couple hours at a beach where we went last year. The water was freezing, but that didn’t stop SoMi from chasing a new favorite toy into Lake Michigan. We did, though, have to cut our beach trip short because the black flies were particularly bothersome.

We explored the coast and came across beautiful homes and great little towns. We spent an afternoon hanging out by the marina in one of the towns. A favorite sign reminded us of the dangers of the marina.

In the afternoons, we’d come back to the campground and take a nap. Then, we’d wake up and Sweets would get a fire started. I’d read by the fire (highly recommended!). We cooked salmon and venison steaks for dinner over the course of the three nights we stayed there. Sweets also might have bought marshmallows as big as your head to make some pretty sweet s’mores every night.

Oh and I can’t forget to mention the visitors to our campsite. Mosquitoes and gnats seemed to disappear once we started up the fire. But, the daddy long legs were everywhere! And their web-making capabilities were the speed of light. Take a look at our water jug, out only a short while before it looked like it had been deserted months ago!

And one more photo I had Sweets take just for you … a belly photo. Let it be noted, we ate like champs on this trip and didn’t exercise all that much. So, some of what you see might be bloat. Ahem. But, the rest of it is all Grasshopper, who seemed to like camping quite a bit, because my morning sickness seemed to have subsided this weekend.

And there you have it. Our weekend off the grid was perfect. We came back with a little more sun exposure, a lot more dirt under our nails and feeling really well rested. Though, I’ll be the first to admit, I was happy to sleep in my own bed last night, I’d still go on this trip all over again. In fact, we’re planning to make a similar trip next year with Grasshopper in tow, too!

Hope y’all had a great weekend and as I said, I hope to catch up with all of you over the coming days!

What a great trip! Sounds like you (and grasshopper) really needed it. You look amazing…I love the teeny tiny belly and can’t wait to see what you look like as you get bigger.

Sounds like such a fun, relaxing weekend. I love being able to drive to a friends house and have a fire any time we want. There is something so peaceful about it. I’m glad that you enjoy going off the grid from time to time, and to hear that the lifestyle seems to agree with Grasshopper!

  4. Christina Says:

Door County is such a great get a way. Looks like everyone had a great and relaxing time.

I love the sign! If you think your water jug is bad, you should see my house! We live in “Harvestman” central. (That is what Mr. P calls daddy-long legs. )

  6. Marie Says:

Looks SO pretty! It’s so good to get away every once in a while (or once a month please!) and chill.

Also? You look adorable! Love the little baby bump. :)

And? I may or may not have the same shoes as you do. In red.

You have no idea how happy that last picture makes me. SQUEE!!!!

Looks beautiful; I’ve heard nothing but lovely things about Door County! S’mores over a fire + reading my campfire light? Doesn’t get better than that if you ask me!

Love the first belly photo too. Thanks for sharing =)

Sounds like a great time! I noticed the daddy long legs when we were camping in MI too! I really don’t like spiders but I learned to just brush them off of whatever they’d perched on and continue on my business. Live and let live, especially when I’m in their territory!

  11. megabrooke Says:

oh my goodness-- i think the daddy long legs might freak me out just a bit.

and VENISON, that’s right! you would have loved my birthday dinner! ;)

you look wonderful! sounds like such a great weekend!

  12. sizzle Says:

That sounds so lovely. Mr. Darcy and I have been scheming of getaways. He’s not so big on camping (childhood trauma from boy scouts, heh) but I think I’ve convinced him that we could compromise. Just getting away, exploring, not having an agenda- that’s bliss! Glad you guys got that. :-)

Oh and? Baby bump? SO CUTE.

  13. k8 Says:

Black flies on the Great Lakes are always annoying! They’ve ruined many a trip for me when all I want to do is play on the beach. Your campsite looks lovely.

  20. Bethany Says:

What baby bump? It’s so tiny! :) That picture of Somi is awesome!!

  21. Mel Heth Says:

You and your tummy are so darn cute! Andy tiny. I remember my cousin telling me that she felt less morning sick when she went camping. She thought maybe because the air was fresher and cooler.

I’m EXTREMELY envious of this trip. I haven’t been camping in SO long and I absolutely love to camp. I did make Mr. W take me to a Japanese BBQ restaurant recently, though, so that I could make smores. If you guys ever get a wild hair, you can come out west and camp with us in Sequoia! :)

  22. Kevin Spencer Says:

Amazing photos, sounds like you guys had an amazing time.

  23. Erin Says:

  32. Polin Says:

After sending you the FB email I started wondering how you and the grasshoper were doing and came to your blog to check. And voila, there’s the belly shot :) Of course, this was taken a month ago (that’s how long I’ve been away from the blogsphere apparently), but I hope that as I keep reading I’ll see more shots. By the way, that one of Somi is beautiful!
