Technicalities
Some things about blogging have gotten me thinking lately … or better stated, have got me annoyed lately. Bear with me while I bitch…
- Comment Luv. Eiwwwww! I always found it sort of redundant … most blogs that use Comment Luv already link the author’s name back to their blog. So, it’s a second link all in one comment? It’s already moderately annoying. But, that’s not what really bothers me. The Comment Luv system itself is so screwed up. It will pick up a blog post I wrote five days ago (and have since written 3 new posts) as my most recent piece of writing. WTF?! Talk about annoying! I’ve started unchecking it – I do not like participating in something so broken! It misrepresents my stellar organization skills!
- Disquis. Go away! Now, look. I get it helps some of you keep track of comments. And that’s great. But, we blog readers get used to leaving comments a certain way. We all know that for Blogger (assuming you’ve got a Blogger account), it asks for your username and password. And for WordPress, it generally asks for Name, email and blog URL (in that order). But then, I’ve started stumbling across blogs using Disquis where the order is all messed up (URL, Name, email? FML!) or it asks for your email address and picks some arbitrary name for said email address, which you have to change if it doesn’t match the name you want to use … and then doesn’t even give you the opportunity to place your URL. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d like some consistency here. Can’t we all just get along?!
I think that’s all I’ll whine about today. I mean, I could go into it about long load times for blogs and brightly colored backgrounds and a few other things that are minor annoyances … but, really, that’s not what todays’ vent session is all about.
What are some of the things on blogs that bother or annoy you?

Two words: word verification.
Drives me crazy. Even more so if comment moderation is on.

I agree with Mandy, but mostly because half the time the word verification isn’t visible and you have to reload the page… having said that, I had to put word verification on my blog because I was getting spammed to high heaven.

Both those things drive me crazy as well (I turned off Comment Luv on my blog awhile ago).
The thing that really annoys me most is usually writing style and rambling posts. Or repitive posts. Or, posts that are about a million different things. I have a very short attention span, it seems.

Comment Luv was cool to me at first because I often scan over people’s names, but their post title would catch my eye. I don’t know what’s up though, if just too many people are using it for them to keep up or what, but it never updates correctly.
Commenting on Blogger blogs just irritates me in general, especially if they only have the Blogger and OpenID options selected. I don’t like using the Google account because I stay logged in to Gmail all of the time and would prefer not to tie any blog stuff to that account. That means I’d have to log out of all Google stuff to log in and comment on someone’s blog. The OpenID stuff is just weird to me. I write a comment, it tells me I need to log in to WordPress, that’s in another window, then I don’t know if the other window took my comment or not…. I just want name, email, and URL!!!

I must not be reading enough blogs because very few things annoy me… Other than when people have music playing automatically. It usually scared the begesus out of me and annoys my husband if he is nearby on his laptop. Music is ok, but give the reader the option of turning it on, not of having to turn it off.

Black background, white font.
Or when something is linked and I can’t tell that it is linked.
And I’m with mandy, word verification drives me up the wall. Only because I seem to get it wrong the first time around!

I have Comment Luv…and it drives me nuts too! I’ve been meaning to disable it for ages, but I always forget about. Perhaps I should do that now. :)
Things that also drive me crazy…word verification, white font on a dark background, and sites that play music!
Ahhh, I feel so much better now.

I agree about the disquis but I do enjoy the comment luv. I see titles I want to read a lot of the time and I normally wouldn’t click on the link.
July 27th, 2010 at 10:20 am
Don’t get me started.
I don’t ever click the button to have the comment thread emailed to me. I did that once and HOLY HELL my in box was flooded.
I know this is something people like to do but I don’t like when people respond to me in the comments but not directly. I don’t go back to blogs to see if I got a reply. Who has the time!?
July 27th, 2010 at 10:49 am
I loathe disquis! I tried forever to just be a “guest” when leaving a comment on blogs that used disquis but every time -- every time!!! -- I got an error message.
I also hate hate hate word verification. Unless you are getting 100 comments a day, you have time to delete the spam.
But comment luv? I kind of like. As others have said, I like seeing post titles. I’ve found some great blogs that way. I had similar problems with the system (comment luv linking to old posts) but when I registered my blog with them, that stopped happening.
July 27th, 2010 at 10:57 am
Ha, funny you would bring this up… I actually wrote a post about this a while ago.
I don’t mind the Comment Luv, because sometimes a blog title will catch my eye and make me click over to the blog… but Disqus is annoying and I heard somewhere that comments will be visible to others, even on protected posts. That’s just BS.
Blogger commenting is kind of tricky -- I don’t like that it opens up in a pop-up window and word verification is annoying.
Why not just have name, email, URL?
I also dislike white font on black background, too much junk in the sidebars, HUGE headers and pages that load forever.

Love comment luv. Hate disquis.
July 27th, 2010 at 11:30 am
Both valid whines. I use neither on my blog. Mostly because I try to keep all of my plugins to a minimum. Less to manage means less to go wrong, although as a bonus, also less to clog up readers with.
July 27th, 2010 at 12:13 pm
Love spelled “Luv” in any circumstance is just wrong.
July 27th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
For some reason I get really peeved when I go to comment on a blog on Blogger, but the option to just use “Name and URL” isn’t there. I have to use a Google Account or OpenID, and I just can’t be bothered. It puts me off!
And I also agree about Disquis, or any other system to make commenting easier other than the default ones!! There are so many WP plugins to make life easier and to organise comments, why choose a whole new system?
July 27th, 2010 at 12:47 pm
light type on a dark background makes me so angry. irrationally so.
July 27th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
Oh, Disquis is SO annoying. I hate the whole system.
Also? Commenting on Blogger blogs that don’t allow URL/Name. Actually, commenting on Blogger blogs is generally an exercise in frustration, but especially if they don’t allow URL/Name.
July 27th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
So funny you mentioned CommentLuv. I just disabled it on my blog because it doesn’t seem to work at all, and I try to uncheck the box if I remember.
I use Intense Debate — do you find it as annoying as Disquis? I’m a fan of it from both the back end and the front end, and I’ve had minimal problems with it.
My pet peeves are word verification and auto-play music. (I think I’m one of the few people who isn’t stabby over white text on dark background. It’s pretty low on my annoyance list.)
July 27th, 2010 at 2:01 pm
I admit I don’t like word verification but I can’t get too upset because I have it on my site to prevent spam.
I don’t like auto-play music.
I’m not a fan of black backgrounds.
July 27th, 2010 at 2:47 pm
I’ve noticed that same thing with Comment Luv -- it doesn’t pickup my most recent post. Ugh.
As for other teeny annoyances, I don’t like having to sign up for “yet one more account” just to be able to leave a comment on someone’s blog.
July 27th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
I am with Mandy -- word verification drives me INSANE. Esp on the blogs where I click to leave my comment and then a pop-up box comes up where I have to do word verification and click again. It annoys me to no end. I wish people would get rid of it.
July 27th, 2010 at 4:31 pm
Word verification has been annoying lately because the word doesn’t show up and I have to reload the page. That being said, I have it on my blog to ward away spammers (because they were getting really annoying).
I hate disquis.
I don’t mind Comment Luv.
July 27th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
Consider Comment Luv deactivated! lol I didn’t know that it bugged anyone, that’s news to me.
I hate any third party commenting system- the best thing about them? If you uninstall them, unless you’re careful, they eat your comments. Lame, lame lame.
July 27th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
I have to say, the Disqus system now is MUCH better than before. So I don’t totally hate it. But Comment Luv, while a good idea, doesn’t work for me at all. Makes me very angry when it acts up like that.
July 28th, 2010 at 12:39 pm
My biggest peeve is when a blog isn’t mobile friendly. This includes huge menus or sidebars, word verification, Disqus (I can’t use it!), and too many pictures. On that note, I really like people who have alternate text for their images so I can pick and choose which images to load.
I will delete CommentLuv as soon as I get near a computer. I’m trying to wittle down my plugins, so why not delete an annoying one?
July 29th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
I rarely get word verifications right on the first attempt and I don’t know why. I think the way they are laid out makes my eyes go funny.
