SoMi Speaks

Hi friends! It’s Friday (thank god!) and that means I’m sending  you away from my blog. Here are a few snippets from the blogosphere that caught my attention this week. Enjoy!

Stored! Last weekend, some friends and I were discussing the merits of holding onto things our kids make (or in my case, will make) at school, in art class, with the babysitter, etc. I have always been of the mindset that less is more. I hate piles of stuff and have no interest in holding onto more than a few key keepsakes. Same holds true for things from my childhood – other than maybe some photos and yearbooks, I am more than happy to give my parents the green light to get rid of everything else. Jess recently had to grapple with this issue, as her parents were ready to purge some of her childhood from their home. {source: Du Wax Loolu}

Unplugged! As you read this right now, Sweets and I are staying in a log house on a lake in rural Maine. Our computers are off. Our phones are stowed away. It’s just us. SoMi. My aunt and uncle. Nature. Water. Bliss. I’ve always appreciated the times we get to unplug. I feel closer to Sweets, because we’re able to connect without interruption. I feel more involved in conversation with others, because the glow of phones, TVs and computers is missing. In some ways, this makes me an old soul, even compared to friends who are only a couple years younger than me. Amy is just a babe compared to me, but she, too, saw the advantages to unplugging. {source: Just a Titch}

Snort! This one is too good to pass up (snort reference, as in LMAO). Check out this tutorial on how not to take self-timer portraits! {source: Digital Photography School}

Bedazzled! Many of us have been lucky enough to make friends through our blogs. There are women from Boston to Chicago to LA whom I consider near and dear to my heart. One of those women is a spunky gal who just relocated from LA to KC (hello, time warp!). She’s an amazing artist and I’ve been lucky enough to wear some of her jewels. Lately, I’ve commissioned her to make me some statement pieces. First, it was a necklace for our trip to Grand Cayman. And now? It’s a necklace that’s a reflection of what will become our nursery. We already know the colors for our nursery: lime green, orange and turquoise. Well, Christyn has created a necklace using our nursery as an inspiration. I couldn’t be more pleased! {source: Bead Up blog, Bead Up shop}

That’s all from here. Even though I’m on vacation, I have some great posts planned for you next week. And I’ll see y’all on the flip side of the flip side!

    I love that unplugged feeling. I don’t experience it all that often, but when I do, it’s down right blissful. That’s why I like weekends at the cabin so much. I usually leave my phone in the cabin and try to stay unplugged.

    Enjoy your time in Maine!

    Ah, vacation. Enjoy Maine. I can’t wait to see photos =) That’s on my “must see” list for sure. Also would love to see some photos of the new necklace!

    I’ve heard of a great idea re:kids art, where you take photos of it and make it into a virtual/real photo album by age of child instead of keeping stacks of artwork…and there will be stacks lol.

    Enjoy Maine, and thanks for the love :) I hope you have a great time!

    Um, and I just realized that I originally blogged “Last and most certainly least, one of my favorite customers…” Total Fail on my part! Fixed it to reflect that your project was most certainly NOT least!

    One of my favorite vacations with The Man was a long weekend at Evergreen Lodge near Yosemite where you get no cell or wifi or 3G reception and where the cabins don’t have TVs. If you need to make a call, a lovely rec center has a phone (with free domestic long distance) and if you need to see a score, the pub on site has a TV, but if you choose to, you can completely disconnect. It’s bliss.

    Even though I do like to stay connected, I recognize that unplugging sometimes is just really gosh darn good for me and I always feel better when I take the time/space to do so.

    Hope you are having a great time in Maine!

    We keep absolutely everything that the little one makes at school. Every semester we start with a blank pantry door in the kitchen. It then gets filled up rather quickly. Rinse, repeat. Prior semester/year stuff is stored in the garage.

    Love the nursery-inspired necklace! What a beautiful and unique piece of jewelry and keepsake to remind you of your journey into motherhood. Gorgeous!

    I am ALL about practically unplugging when I’m away too. Sure, I need to do better, but I start small, with the work Blackberry, and build from there. ANd you know what? It feels nice.
