Moments

Posted by SoMi's Nilsa on Monday, August 23rd, 2010

This weekend, as I alluded last week, was jam packed with plans. Even when Sweets and I skipped out on commitments, we still were left with very little downtime. That said, there were some particular moments that stuck out for me.

The moment I had dinner with a girlfriend. Just the two of us. In a crowded, loud, bumping restaurant. And yet, with all the energy around us, we were able to focus only on one another. Sharing laughs. And even a tear or two. Cherish times like those.

The moment when Sweets and I picked up my brother from the airport, but couldn’t find him. On the phone, I asked him what he’s wearing. He said, a green shirt. And then I saw him, marching towards me in an oatmeal colored shirt. Cherish my color-blind brother.

The moment when my niece and the two mamas came over to retrieve my brother. Knowing my niece was soooooooo excited to see her daddy. As she was marching towards our front door, I asked, Who’s inside? Who do you get to see when you come inside? And she responded, Uncle Sweets?! Cherish the filters that girl lacks.

The moment Sweets and I attended a 1-year old birthday party at an amazing local park. Getting to share happy times with friends. Exploring a new setting. And enjoying lunch with the lakefront as a backdrop. Cherish this city and the capacity to discover new places every week!

The moments Sweets and I shared with dear friends and their children. The abundance of information they provided regarding child rearing. The tutorial they provided us on baby wraps. The warm baby seat cover they loaned us knowing we’d be bringing home a winter baby. The dinner and laughs we shared. Cherish friends like these.

The moments over a  brunch shared with our growing family. Loving the niece who ate butter straight from the little packets, followed by cream from other little packets to wash it down. The baby mama who is due with Baby #2 today, yet out sharing good times with loved ones. The extra time I got to spend with my brother, despite him being in town to support his girls. Cherish that my definition of family is uniquely mine.

The moments when Sweets helped our neighbors unload a heavy, wooden head-board from their truck. While I watched their little dogs, making sure they didn’t escape the backyard. And, after seeing said headboard being stored in their garage, innocently yelling to our neighbor, That’s a nice piece of wood you’ve got there. And him responding, That’s what she said. ‘Nuff said. Cherish the moments we find ourselves laughing uncontrollably with such good friends.

The moments in Buy Buy Baby where Sweets and I continued to add things to our in-the-works registry. Appreciating most of the big registry-related decisions are behind us, but fearing all the little decisions ahead of us. Laughing that I couldn’t let Sweets out of my sight, for fear of what he’d add to the registry, and yet he still was able to sneak in more White Sox clothing. Thankful for online editing capabilities, where I deleted said items. Cherish my time with Sweets as we prepare for an expanded household.

The moments during an afternoon spent with Sweets’ family celebrating the 40 years his parents have been married. Finding comfort in seeing how much pleasure Sweets’ parents get from a simple day with their children and grandchildren. Learning from Sweets’ nephew that I’m having twins who will be named Ben (boy) and Salty (girl). Cherish that I got so lucky by marrying into such a loving family.

Those are the moments that I just can’t fathom passing up. Running from one moment to the next, packing them in, loving every fleeting moment that passes by. Living life. And enjoying it. Those are the moments we’re supposed to create, embrace and remember.

What special moments made your weekend so cherished?

Another busy weekend for you! I don’t know how feminine “Salty” is, but congrats on the twins ;-)

The best part of my weekend was cheering my dearest friend as she completed a 2 day LiveStrong race. It was amazing to see so many people exhilarated at the finish line.

the green shirt comment made me giggle, hope his socks matched!

I had a fun/full weekend. Some favorite moments:

    - Re-connecting with friends I hadn’t seen in a long time at the birthday party for my best friend’s husband on Satudray night.

    - Finishing my 18 miler on Sunday and feeling like I could have kept going (instead of collapsing on the grass and nearly crying like I did when I ran my 17 miler a couple of weeks ago).

    - Almost finishing the blanket I am crocheting. This is a huge feat because this blanket has sort of been the death of me. All I am going to say is that this friend better f’ing LOVE this blanket. ;) I love knitting but it turns out I do NOT love crocheting… it frustrated me to no end.

Another great weekend. I miss my family…

This post made me a little teary-eyed (in a good way)!

I spent most of my weekend in bed recovering (or trying to recover) from this stupid cold/bronchial thing I have going on (thank goodness for doctor’s since I’m going this morning!) but I cherished the time I spent 100% relaxing, taking naps, ignoring technology and working on healing myself. Doesn’t come up that often.

Lovely weekend full of good food, friends and family, who can ask for more.

We celebrated my father in law’s 75th birthday with my brother and sister in law at Morton’s Steakhouse with my father in law basking in the company of his two sons. Yesterday we spend the day wandering around the Glenwood art far debating on some art pieces and ending up with two amazing photographs and one unique painting. Then meeting up with a friend at a bar catching up.

    Love weekends like that!

I’m convinced that you have the most wonderful family in the world :)

My favorite moment from this weekend was Jesse taking me to How To Train Your Dragon when I got into a sad/upset mood on Saturday. Perfect pick me up!

another full weekend for you. it’s so nice that you’re able to cherish moments from it all.
(the comment about your brother being color blind make me chuckle!)

this weekend i savored the moment i reclined on the couch, my legs propped up in matt’s lap after completing my 18 mile run. i cherished the impromptu margaritas he and i shared on friday night. i enjoyed the rainy weather this morning, and the two ears of corn on the cob i scarfed down last night.

  9. san Says:

    Aww, good times… I am jealous ;)

My good moment of the weekend was getting back into going to the gym and feeling good afterwards… I am hoping to make it part of my weekly routine again :)

It all sounds so wonderful. I can’t wait to hear about Baby Z’s new little sister!

    My own cherished moments:

Watching my cousins newly formed band play at an art gallery Friday with my family and friends, being there to support him.

Spending the day Saturday shopping with my teenage cousins, laughing and having fun hanging out.

Laughing with one of my best friends and her little sister over a few bottles of wine while putting together bridal shower center pieces and discussing upcoming wedding related events in the next few months.

Spending the majority of yesterday with my brother and a few friends tailgating, enjoying the sunshine, and watching a concert.

  11. Jess Says:

Um, I’m pretty sure the highlight of my weekend was the two-hour nap yesterday. Not as exciting as yours, perhaps, but oh so necessary.

  12. Amber from Girl with the Red Hair Says:

Aww love this post. Sounds like a great weekend!

This weekend me and Eric went clothes shopping and he actually TRIED ON clothes for me (a big feat for him). It made for a delightfully fun afternoon!

  13. Alice Says:

i am so! behind! on blogs, but have thoroughly enjoyed catching on yours finally! i don’t know how you folks who are actually pregnant manage to stand the 9-month wait; i’m DYING to meet your little grasshopper already :)

my weekend was spent in vegas, celebrating the 30th birthday of a friend who i’ve known over half our lives :)

  14. Ginger Says:

Sounds like an amazing weekend! Mine was pretty low-key, though we did have a date night to see Inception--it was nice to see the movie and spend an hour or so afterward talking and dissecting it. No baby talk allowed.
Of course, spending Sunday with the baby and his daddy, laughing and playing, that’s pretty awesome too.

  15. Kevin Spencer Says:

Every other weekend my g/f’s little one stays with her Dad so we have an entire “date weekend”. We always look forward to these as we get to spend some quality time with each other. This weekend was such a weekend. It was so much fun.

  16. Hannah Says:

We are a lucky lot, we who can take pause to appreciate moments such as these. All sounds oh so lovely, Nilsa!

  17. sizzle Says:

    - My nephew running out to greet us when we arrived at my Mom’s for dinner on Sunday.

-The surprise and joy on Mr. D’s face when we walked into the bar and all his friends were in there waiting to celebrate him.

-The resonating beauty of the communal “om” in my Sunday yoga class.

My mind immediately went to all the downer parts of my weekend (there were a lot cuz I was IN A MOOD) so thanks for making me push past all that rubble to find some good.

  18. KT Says:

Relaxing in our almost-finished living room. We are slowly but surely getting to living in a real, unpacked house.

  19. Marie Says:

Your niece is so adorable. Love her replies and comments!

Always good to have such wonderful and loving friends and family around. :)

  20. Mel Heth Says:

I needed to read this post today as a reminder to watch for those moments. I seem to have lost my ability to stop in them lately -- even the really great ones like those we had in Seattle and Vancouver this weekend. You make me feel even more determined to get back on the horse…

  21. hillary Says:

Ben and Salty. Nice! I like it. I tried to get my parents to name my little sister Tulip because the name they picked (Sheena) was too “dusty.”
