SoMi Speaks

Whoosh

Posted by SoMi's Nilsa on Monday, August 30th, 2010

Oh emmmm geee, y’all. Is it really Monday already? Am I still breathing? I must be, I’m writing this post, right? Because, hello, this weekend was insane. Absolutely insane. Whoosh. It was there and now it’s gone.

It all started on Thursday after work. My old hair stylist who moved back to Kansas was in town. We caught up for a couple hours and I loaned her my bike for the triathlon she completed this weekend (so she didn’t have to ship hers from KS). Sweets picked me up so we could rush to one of my favorite Mexican eateries to meet another friend visiting from out of town. I went to UNC with this friend, though I didn’t meet him until we both were living in Chicago. He’s now living back in NC, but was in town for business. We had a great dinner catching up with him and getting all sorts of parenting advice!

Just as we were settling into bed, utterly exhausted, my phone rang. It was my brother announcing he was a dad, again. Another baby girl clocking in at 6 lbs 11 oz. He sounded exhausted, but was super stoked he was able to be there for the birth (his flight back to NY was on Friday night and he couldn’t skip it as he was then heading to London for work).

Of course, I was super stoked, too. On Friday at work, I told my boss I’d be taking a half day, so I could swing by the hospital to see my niece. First, it was to a kids store to buy some gifts. Then to a bakery to get some sweet nibbles. Then to a gourmet food store to get some healthier nibbles. And a final stop at Starbucks (the new mama wanted an iced latte, what can I say?!).

I made it to the hospital in the afternoon where I got to spend a precious few hours with my new and expanding family! It was such an honor to be in that room during the first few hours after Baby Zee got to meet Baby Roz. I’d point to the baby and ask Zee who that was, She’d whisper, It’s a baby. Then, I’d ask what was the baby’s name. Zee would respond in a hushed tone, Baby Sister.

OK, I know. You want to see pictures. Did I mention I brought my camera and didn’t stop taking photos the whole time I was there? I’m not kidding. Over 2 hours, I took about 170 photos. I won’t bore you with all of them … just a few of my favorites!

Later that night, Sweets and I had dinner with old co-workers. I brought homemade salsa and guacamole. There was roadside chicken. And beergaritas (I had to abstain – such a shame!). And lots of other good eats. Talk of showers and 50th birthday parties (it’s hard to believe some of my friends are turning 50 – does it count if they don’t act a lick over 35?). It’s a group of people I’ve known for over a decade and just love seeing from time to time.

Saturday morning, we were up early (despite Sweets’ over-consumption of those delicious drinks!). First, we had to get our painter situated. The orange in the kitchen was replaced (loved the orange, hated how it looked with our cabinets). Once he was geared up to go, Sweets and I grabbed SoMi and left town (thankfully, the painter is a childhood friend of Sweets, so we trusted him in our home while we were gone).

We drove to Kokomo, Indiana to visit with dear friends we met while we were honeymooning in Costa Rica a few years ago. Since our time with them was less than 24 hours, we chose to keep things low key. Hanging out. Going to the dog park. Watching too many episodes of Myth Busters (though, the boys would argue we didn’t watch nearly enough). Sneaking in Invictus, a movie I liked during those moments I actually kept my eyes open. And so on. Our weekend with them ended Sunday morning after breakfast, when we hopped back in the car to return to Chicago.

And Sunday. A day of rest, no? Well, actually, no. Not in our house. We got back to Chicago around noon. Stopped by Sweets’ parents’ condo to pick up a tent (to loan to a friend). Met my KS friend at her hotel to retrieve my bike. Got the truck washed. Came home to a kitchen with a beautiful new, green wall! Unpacked. Went grocery shopping. Brought dinner to the girls, so Dan could meet and spend some time with Baby Roz. And eventually collapsed from such a long week and weekend.

Seriously, I’m pretty positive I can’t do this week in and week out. Thankfully, this week involves our regular nonsense (aqua class, soccer game, childbirth class) plus getting ready for our camping trip next weekend and arrival of my mom next week (she’ll actually arrive over the weekend, but won’t be staying with us until next week). If you can believe it, this week feels like it’s gonna be a breeze compared to the week that just was.

Breathe in. Exhale.

Tell me, what was a highlight (or three) of your weekend?

Congrats on the new niece. My weekend was busy too (but not as busy as yours!) Friday I met a dear friend’s fiance for the first time. I attended a bday bbq on Saturday afternoon. Sunday was more low key and involved a lot of laundry (yuck!). Try to get some rest this week!

She is beautiful and adorable. Congratulations to you all!

I don’t know where you get the energy from to do all the things you do, but I’m so glad you have it. And sounds like you had a wonderful weekend!

I’m going to sound totally stupid but what are “beergaritas?” because that just sounds awesome.

Congrats again on the new family. Everyone looks so happy! Our Friday night started with a Ravinia concert. I had just got a bad summer cold, so I was not as into it as I usually am into Ravinia. Sat was all about Ella and local Jr. Football/Cheerleading/Poms. She had cheer photos, then a game, then I put in my volunteer hour at concessions, then Jason put in his hour while I watched the kids play at the park. Lucky for us, my brother and future sis-in-law called, they were in the area and were able to make it just in time to see Ella cheer. I was exhausted (still sick). Sunday I “took off” (didn’t go anywhere) and took a nap, yet I still ended up doing a ton of housework, enjoying the kids being silly and working on Statistics problems for my online class. Today I have a headache, but I’m still going to try to excercise a little for the first time since my surgery. I’m hoping the headache will melt away… (I hate taking drugs). I assume we will see you this coming weekend?

Wow you a woman in motion. You newest neice is precious, she is already so loved.

This weekend was a mix or home improvement and friends. Saturday night we hung out with some neighbors and one of our newest neighbors has a great Dane puppy so he was smothered with attention.

Yesterday we spent time with my in laws at their condo BBQ.

It was a lovely weekend except for the nasty cold that I got last night.

You are a whirlwind of activity, girl! But it all sounds like a lot of fun. I feel exhausted from my weekend too. Had my L.A. BFF in town and it was go go go from Wednesday night til last night. I will likely crash and burn tonight.

I’m so looking forward to getting back into my routine or I should say, finding one with Mr. D since he officially lives with me now.

  7. Jess Says:

OMG just READING about your weekend makes me want a nap. But Babies Zee and Roz are both so beautiful! What a gorgeous family they all are.

  8. Amber from Girl with the Red Hair Says:

I love the way you write the details of your weekend, it’s like a story that I totally get pulled into!!

The highlight of my weekend was definitely my mom visiting, I hadn’t seen her since the beginning of July and won’t see her again now until Christmastime. It was so nice to just hang out, shop, go to the movie etc. with her!

  9. A Super Girl Says:

Baby Roz is adorable! Congrats to the whole family!!!

  10. Sara Says:

My goodness that is a whirlwind! I thought my weekend was busy, but now it just sounds like a breeze. My highlight was getting pedicures with the mom and sister and then putting together the centerpieces for the wedding.

That little baby is adorable :) So cute!

  24. Lisa from Lisa's Yarns Says:

Holy Smokes, you did fit alot in!

First off -- congrats on being an aunt again. The baby is beautiful -- as are all the pictures you took!!

Isn’t hiring someone to paint the best decision ever? I did that 2 years ago when I thought I was going to list my condo and wanted my bathroom painted. Best. Decision. Ever. It’s fabulous to come home to a professionally painted space!!

  25. Mel Heth Says:

This post makes me want to say “Daaamn Gina!” I don’t even remember what that reference is from -- In Living Color, maybe?

I’m astounded. Congratulations on becoming an auntie again!! Great pictures. How fun it will be for all the cousins to play together when they’re a little older. :)

  26. Glam-O-Mommy Says:

Baby Roz is so sweet it makes my uterus ache LOL! Whew…you were busy. I got tired just reading about your weekend! My big event of the weekend was throwing my daughter a 2nd birthday party for 12 of her little friends and 14 adults associated with said little friends at an indoor playplace with a bouncy house. It was very fun and went extremely well, but I was so tired when it was over, and I didn’t even do all the work--my mom helped me!!
