Exercise

Posted by SoMi's Nilsa on Friday, September 3rd, 2010

This week marked the halfway point of the childbirth class Sweets and I have been taking. During the class, the doula-instructor had us do an exercise. She asked us to draw our vision of a DOOR INTO LABOR.

Sweets came up with the following:

His reasoning was that he’d like for me to experience the initial stages of labor at home (the door on the left) … so that when we arrive at the hospital (door on the right), we will only be there for delivery (not, labor and delivery, as the floor is described).

My drawing looked like this:

My reasoning is multi-layered. First, labor is this natural thing, thus the trees, grass and sky. And each stage of labor leads to the next stage of labor, thus the doorway leading to another tree with another doorway and so on.

It was a fun exercise to see the different perspectives in our class.

Speaking of exercise, I’m thinking about lots of long walks this weekend with views like this:

And there will be other forms of exercise, too, because Sweets and I are heading to one of our favorite spots to go camping with friends. Four wonderful days ushering in fall, celebrating babies (our friends are due 2 days before us) and unplugging from it all.

Hope y’all have a great weekend and I’ll see you on the flip side!

You’re quite the artist. I like the tree. DUde! I had a nightmare last night that I had a baby (right now, it would be a nightmare for me). I don’t know. Just felt like sharing.

Lovely vista! Enjoy your getaway. :-)

That’s a really interesting exercise- I love what you came up with.

This is so interesting. And, you are quite the artist! My drawing would look more like Sweets’ at least in terms of level of skill and detail if not in terms of the concept.

Wow you are a good drawer -- draw-er… how do you spell that word.

    Moving on.

I find it hilarious how different yours and Sweets photos are! Lol

Have some great walks this weekend :-)

What a wonderful exercise, especially for the fathers. As women, we probably tend to get caught up in our OWN views and perspectives on labor that we kind of forget about what the experience will be like for the men.

    Enjoy your weekend!

Ha, that’s an interesting exercise to take. Hazel and I will have to do something similar to see how different our ideas are on any given topic. Fun!

I really like your tree within a tree within a tree etc. drawing. It’s like a very meaningful dream that stays with you after you wake up.

Love the drawings! Thanks for sharing -- very cool to see your interpretations through your drawings!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend camping! I imagine we had similar temps? It was pretty cool up at the cabin, but I liked it. We sat around a fire most of the day on Saturday and that was fabulous.
